Circus Abyssinia: Ethiopian Dreams Bibi and Bichu Ltd

Circus Abyssinia was a hot ticket at the Edinburgh Fringe a couple of years ago, and has a clutch of four- and five-star reviews to show off from its international tour since then. The show's narrative is built around two Ethiopian boys who dream of becoming jugglers - mirroring the inspiring real-life tale of the troupe's two founders. But it's the energy and physicality of the performance which reviews highlight most, with acrobatics, aerial work and clowning among the highlights.

Circus Abyssinia weaves the dreams of its cast through heart-stopping feats of acrobatic daring. Inspired by real-life jugglers Bibi and Bichu, the show tells the tale of two young Ethiopian brothers who dreamed of the circus in a country without one. When the boys make a wish upon the moon they are joined by a host of high-flying figures - some enchanting, others menacing, but all of them circus ‘dreamers’, who together awaken an incredible new Ethiopian tradition.

He's 66 and he has his own leprechaun, but is Gerry a crock, or is he gold? He'll let you decide. In his third Brighton show the one-time 'Angel of the Month' winner explains how 'Send in the Clowns' is his story. Or is it 'Death of a Clown'? Lunchtimes at the Temple or 2pm at the Kennel, Gerry will be explaining. Expect attempts at songs, eating bananas, Irish dancing and maybe a crock of gold. Having done stand-up and clown around London for five years, Gerry's focusing more on clown. It's enjoyable, funny and makes a great early afternoon break.

My Fern Flower Unearthed Theatre

4 stars My Fern Flower is a strangely-named and strangely-beautiful show, which sits somewhere on the boundary between theatre, storytelling, and music. When you net it right down, it’s the tale of two brothers: Jonah, who narrates the tale, and Jim - ten years younger - who needs help that only Jonah can give. But there’s a mythical dimension to it as well: Jim has a free-rolling imagination and a book of collected stories, including one story that the brothers decide must never be told. Read the full review.

Two Brothers.
A collection of tales.
One final journey.

‘My Fern Flower’ uses a full length live soundscape, physical theatre and storytelling to transport you into realms beyond comprehension. You will laugh, cry and be mesmerised at our humanity. Come experience one man's quest to save those he loves the most.

7090: Kwat Toet Sop 7090 with Brighton Spiegeltent

It sounds faintly rude to me, but "Kwat Toet Sop" actually means Quirky Soup, and Dutch collective 7090 are promising an afternoon of oddball happenings to round off Brighton Fringe. Centred on the Spiegeltent, we're promised priests on hoverboards, an impossible performance from a marching band, and a cleansing ritual involving both bubbles and strawberry jam. 7090 have a chequered history in Brighton - some of their work's been mind-blowing, some less than stunning - but it's free to watch, so there's no reason not to drop by.

BOOM! Have no fear, 7090 is here.
The (in)famous collective from Amsterdam is back in action.
Pop-up happenings from their world and your imagination, like a child will explode with unrestrained possibilities for adventure.
Abstract priests going around the church, fanfares parading in and around the gardens and a washing happening for a fresh start: What more do you need?

3:30pm to 4:30pm
Let's Get Tough Sons & Co.

Assertiveness training and self-defence for the contemporary woman. A self-defence inspired sketch comedy and cabaret show.

Sons & Co are sketch double-act Imogen Edmundson and Fi Simpson. Imogen was one of Funny Women’s One to Watch in 2017, and having beaten the black-out at Up the Creek, has performed at their Friday night show on multiple occasions.

Fiona was Pegasus Comedy’s New Act of the Year 2018 and a semi-finalist in the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year 2018. She has trained in comedy improvisation with the Free Association and was described as an “outstanding comedy performer”.

3:30pm to 4:30pm
Griffin and Jones: Surprisingly Good Magicians Griffin and Jones / Sweet Productions

Despite the modest title, there'll be nothing surprising about another hour's fine entertainment from Griffin & Jones. Their magical double-act combines high-quality illusions with unforced comic banter; they have a joyful rapport with each other, and that good-natured enjoyment spreads out into the audience, too. Their tricks are multi-layered and, even if you've seen a lot of stage magic, there'll probably be something fresh and confounding; this new show could still have some rough edges, but past form's enough to make it a Sure Choice.

The pioneers of slapdash magic are back with another mishmash of magical mayhem! Join them in a world where the jokes come thick and fast, anything is possible, and nothing is quite what it seems. These award-winning idiots have become famous for their fast banter, tight chemistry, contagious energy, and showstopping wizardry.

3:55pm to 4:45pm
Drawn and Quartered Cry Havoc Theatre Company

5 stars As we take our seats for this finely-wrought two-hander, the stage is shrouded in darkness - and there’s a big surprise in store for us once the lights come on. The entire back wall is covered with a stunning abstract mural; in front of it stands a woman, freeze-framed in open-mouthed horror, like a reveal from a home-makeover show gone terribly wrong. The problem, we soon learn, isn’t just what’s appeared on on the walls of her living room, but also the man who’s responsible. Read the full review.

There's a review on the way for this one, but we've seen enough already to make it today's Sure Choice. A thoughtful, sometimes intense two-hander, Drawn and Quartered studies the fallout from a failed relationship - set against the literal backdrop of a giant abstract mural, immortalising the couple's shared life. The script demands your attention as it traverses emotional highs and lows, and your perspectives will change as you learn more about what makes the couple tick. It's a powerful and credible performance, which offers lots to think about but presents no easy answers.

Michael and Ana have had no communication for six months. Hearing Michael’s painting career is on the downslide, Ana takes pity on him and hires him to paint the studio apartment they shared for four years, to prepare it to sell. She leaves for a couple of days to find he has indeed painted. But not the colour she left.

A beautiful portrayal of a relationship with moments that everyone will recognise. Maggie Bofill is one of the founder members of Labyrinth Theatre company in New York, and together with Claudine Sinnett from Cry Havoc Theatre Company, this production is one not to miss.

In 1941, England had its Battle of Britain. Bear North Brainfruit

4 stars (previous review) Reviewed in 2018 A show with a dancing bear might sound barbaric… but relax, this particular bear wants to dance. There it stands at the side of the stage, the broadest of smiles on its big brown head, elegantly shimmying its big brown paws in time to Cajun folk songs. The songs are provided by a trio of musicians, who come from Brighton but tell us they're somehow in Canada, and a travelling poet has also tagged along. Oh – and did I mention that the bear is wearing a cheerful summery dress? Read the full review.

It's hard to explain what makes Bear North so charming. It's a fantastical, whimsical musical journey, featuring a smiling bear in a summery dress - which sways and shimmies throughout the show, just because it likes to dance. The Cajun-inspired soundtrack's provided by a trio of local musicians, and a poet comes along for the ride as well; there are loose themes of outdoor life and the healing power of nature. But really it's about the joy of a free spirit, and of singing, dancing and telling stories for no reason at all.

‘Twin Peaks’ meets ‘The Singing Ringing Tree’. Wonderfully absurd, with a dancing buffalo, wolf and grizzly bear. Conceived in a dream by multi-award-winning performer, Roy Hutchins, this utopian vision is whimsical, comic and moving. Journey through a landscape filled with log cabins, forests, mountains and magical waterfalls, drawn through clever riffs and augmented fiddle playing, harmonies and dance.

"Songs of lakes, firesides, and bears. An impossible odyssey." Highly Recommended. (Fringe Review).
“The tables were turned and it was me who danced to Bear North’s tune” **** (Fringe Guru).

Ade Foiadelli: Comfortably Dumb Ade Foiadelli

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

That pretty much sums up the show.

The idiot is Ade Foiadelli, who has been accused of using logic that "defines good, opinionated, stand-up" (Chortle), as well as charged with being "an enthusiastic and charming comedian" (Broadway Baby). He also writes his own blurb for web listings like this but loses the will to refer to myself in the third person by the end of it.

Come along, I'd love to meet you.

Further Education Unmasked Theatre

4 stars It’s the middle of the 1980’s. Margaret Thatcher is at the height of her power; but she’s threatened by an industrial dispute, a year-long coal-miners’ strike which threatens to bring her government to its knees. As the quarrel grows ever uglier, striking miners travel far from their home-towns, picketing the lorries moving stockpiled coal. Frank is one such miner, and he’s found himself a billet with a sympathetic group of students - who offer him a sofa in the flat they share. But the students are modern feminist thinkers, and Frank… well, Frank isn’t. Read the full review.

1985: Frank the miner likes doing his job and reading the Sun. Unfortunately, Maggie is after his job and his new housemates definitely don't like him reading the Sun. In a riotous clash of class, morals and feminism, very traditional Frank finds himself bunking down with three very modern students at the heart of the picketing wars.

In a country seeking to eradicate his livelihood, Frank must decide how he would like to be remembered once the line is inevitably drawn.

Award-winning Brighton company Unmasked Theatre returns with a winner from the highly successful Brighton Scratch Night.

6:30pm to 7:30pm
John Robertson: The Dark Room Austin Talent

Deeply surreal and perennially popular, The Dark Room is lo-fi game show – whose malevolent host seems inspired by a mix of Chris Tarrant and Brian Blessed. Over the course of the hour, volunteers embark on a multiple-choice quest to escape the titular Dark Room, directed and often hindered by a “disembodied head” on the stage. Host John Robertson plays off the audience, infusing his often-insulting patter with enough wit and energy to divert any possible offence. A profoundly strange, but surprisingly compulsive show.

"Watching audiences attempt to tackle the challenge and fail is one of the funniest sights around, don’t miss it" (Daily Telegraph)

YOU AWAKE TO FIND YOURSELF IN A DARK ROOM! The audience is trapped in a retro video game with the merciless overlord of improv, John Robertson - escape and win £1000... but fail, and be brutally murdered by the rest of the crowd!

Damien Lantern Theatre

5 stars (previous review) Reviewed in 2016 Damien is one of Fringe 2016’s hidden treasures: a 40-year-old script, a masterful solo performance, and a story that’s both shocking and inspirational. It tells the real-life tale of Father Damien de Veuster, a Catholic priest – and now a saint – who lived in a community of leprosy sufferers on a remote island in Hawaii. Cruelly exiled by their government, the lepers of Molokai endured a lawless and impoverished existence, cut off even from the comforts of religious faith. Cut off, that is, until a young Flemish priest named Damien came along. Read the full review.

Returning to Brighton after a short but successful run in 2016, Damien is a meaty and thoughtful piece of theatre based on a shocking but inspirational real-life tale. It's the story of a priest who lived among an island colony of leprosy-sufferers; it charts his journey from naive enthusiasm, through self-doubt, to anger at the world's ills. Our 5* review from 2016 cited sole actor Daniel Finlay's expansive, convincing performance, enhanced by the evocative detail of the set and design.

In the Shadow of the Black Dog All The Pigs

Not long ago, I lost my best friend. Soon after, I sat in the hospital emergency room, alone and scared, believing I didn’t have long left to live. I felt unable to call any of my mates to be with me. A few months later I was chased down by two knife-wielding men on a moped, and narrowly escaped. After overcoming these events a thought stayed with me I haven’t been able to shift; I don’t know if I can save myself.

I eventually reached out to my mates and found we were all harbouring the same fears about being a man or not a good enough one. This is why I wrote ‘In the Shadow of the Black'.

Myra Pretty Villain Productions Ltd

A show called Myra courts controversy, and duly divided opinion on its debut at last year's Fringe - though reviewers were united in praising the quality of the performance. This one-woman show pictures the notorious Moors Murderer alone in her prison cell, telling the story of her life and crimes from her own perspective. Is she the callous sociopath she's made out to be, or can we find reasons - though never justifications - in the story of her early life? It's a provocative treatment of a difficult question, making this the very definition of a Bold Choice.

"You couldn’t hate me more than I hate myself. I have asked God for His forgiveness, but I couldn’t ask for yours, for how can I ever expect you to forgive me when I cannot forgive myself." Few have attracted such notoriety or public loathing as the Moors murderers. Myra’s story is that of a very dark world, which no-one wants to visit. From her prison cell, Myra decides to reveal her story to a world that might not wish to listen, or can possibly bear to.
