Bed Among the Lentils by Alan Bennett library theatre touring company

Alan Bennett sealed his reputation as the master of observation with ‘Talking Heads’, his award-winning series of 12 monologues.

One of the best known of this series, 'Bed Among the Lentils' features Susan, a frustrated vicar's wife with a fondness for sherry, who distracts herself from her ambitious husband and his doting parishioners by conducting an affair with a local grocer, Ramesh Ramesh.

“Darkly comic, tragically poignant and wonderfully uplifting, the series is widely regarded as a modern classic“ (The Times).

2:00pm to 3:00pm
Babes/Pigs in the City Amy Xander & Ginnia Cheng

What happens when one small-town bumpkin and one third-world brat try to spread their wings and become two cosmopolitan, cool customers? A whole lot of joy, despair, whipped cream and knickers, that's what! Will they become sophisticated babes? Or just two pigs in the city?

Brought to you lovingly by up-and-coming comedians, the silly yet acerbic Amy Xander and the sharp and sassy Ginnia Cheng. Both were 'So You Think You're Funny' semi-finalists in 2018, and Amy has written comedy for BBC Radio 4 Extra.

2:10pm to 3:00pm
All Work, No Play Awk The Clown / Sweet Productions

4 stars Awk The Clown rushes onto the stage, and collapses - literally - behind an office desk. He’s late for work, it seems; he has a report to write, page after page of soul-destroying tedium, a harsh-ticking metronome reminding him of the deadline ahead. There should be more to life than this. There is more to life than this. And over the course of fifty speechless but playful minutes, Awk will do his very best to find it. Read the full review.

I saw this show as a work-in-progress at last year's Fringe, and though it was rough around the edges it held a lot of potential. Drawing on elements of clowning with a dash of physical theatre, the show evokes a burgeoning romance in a monotonous office; the scenario is recognisable and realistic, though the details are sometimes surreal. It was a confident performance with moments of both intensity and tenderness, and I'm hopeful this fully-developed version will realise the clear promise of the original.

We all have to work. Awk longs for a better life outside the shackles of mediocrity, but there’s something that keeps holding him back. Awk is on the clock, and he doesn’t have long until his time is up.

All Awk wants is to impress you and to be loved. He's quite happy if you laugh at him, not with him, as long as he gets the attention he desperately craves. So come and join Awk as he returns for a second year of Brighton Fringe adventures. He may even sing you a little song to say thank you!

The Good Russian Enchanted Would

Andrew Byron is an actor who has spent most of his career playing Russians. They’re invariably the ‘bad guys’ and usually end up dead (He was shot in the head in 'Killing Eve' and vaporised in 'Doctor Who').

But this story is about a Russian you don’t see on your screens: Innokenty Afanasievich is honest, decent and simple. He is a dreamer, seeking his fortune in the West.

"I am going to the land of the Shakespeare and the Bananarama". But the past that he is so desperate to leave behind is now threatening to catch up with him.

3:15pm to 4:15pm
Don't Bother Bróccán Tyzack-Carlin

A stand-up poetry show about dead dogs, chocolate and nostalgia. Bróccán Tyzack-Carlin presents a semi-coherent exploration of nothing in particular, using some words that rhyme and some more that don't. You're allowed to search for Higher Meaning in this hour of comedy and spoken word, but it's probably easier if you don't bother.

Bróccán is the winner of Manchester Word War 2018, a Hammer & Tongue National finalist 2019, and and an alumnus of the multi award-winning Durham Revue. ***** (Bunbury Magazine)

3:25pm to 4:40pm
GROOMED Mankind & Ingenious Purpose

4 stars Groomed is the painfully honest telling of writer and performer Patrick Sandford’s abuse at the hands of David Moorby, one of his primary school teachers. It weaves a complex narrative from myth, historical anecdote and personal experience, to speak important truths about shame and the complexities of abuse. With added saxophone music. Read the full review.

Three times winner at Brighton Fringe 2016, 'GROOMED' is rebooted and back.

How can a truth be told? A betrayed schoolboy, a Japanese soldier and the inventor of the saxophone. Three extraordinary stories are brought together to show how, when a secret is spoken, it can save your life. This show’s emotional power has gripped audiences in Norway, UK and the USA. Intelligent and unmissable.

"One of the most moving pieces I have ever seen. I left the theatre educated and entertained – a most rare experience..." (Sandi Toksvig)

3:30pm to 4:30pm
Crime Scene Illusion Tracy Wise

4 stars Tracy Wise doesn’t match the stereotype of a showy stage magician. As she strides out of the wings in a no-nonsense trouser suit, she’s every inch the DI from a hard-boiled crime thriller; and of course, that’s exactly the persona she’s aiming to convey. Crime Scene Illusion is a clever genre mash-up, which combines well-executed magic tricks with a satisfying detective back-story, in an impressive hour of crime-themed chicanery. Read the full review.

A unique and innovative performance combining the worlds of forensic investigation, psychological magic, and storytelling. Interactive, engaging, and entertaining.

4:30pm to 5:25pm
Viggo The Viking The Other Theatre

It's a Bold Choice because it's a brand-new show, but Gaulier-trained clown Viggo Venn has impeccable pedigree. Our 5* review for his previous show praised its "steady stream of surprising and sometimes hysterical ideas"; he's a charming, endearing performer, keen to engage with the audience and unafraid to expose his own vulnerability. This new show sees him in the persona of the world's worst Viking, facing mythical enemies as he tries - and fails - to launch a raid on Brighton.

WINNER: Best Comedy Brighton Fringe 2016
NOMINEE: Best Comedy Brighton Fringe 2017

From the deep forests and tall mountains of Norway comes Gaulier-trained clown Viggo Venn (Zach & Viggo) with a new, funny and totally silent comedy show!

Viggo The Viking is the dumbest viking in the world. As he tries to invade Brighton, he will face dragons and fail.

4:30pm to 5:30pm
Stoned, Stupid, and Stuck (A Californian Fairytale) Sweaty Palms Productions

The plan was simple: steal the drugs, sell the drugs and get out of town. Sequoyah and Rose are tired of living second-rate lives in the watered-down ghost town they call home. Following the guidance of the mysterious (and possibly hallucinated) Chicken Lady, our heroes come face to face with the real problems of their town. As these women stagger through their misadventure they meet a host of talking animals and a mysterious hermit that help them come to terms with the town they live in.

4:40pm to 5:40pm
An Adult Dr Seuss Geoff Allnutt

An Adult Dr Seuss is a one-man-show by performance poet Geoff Allnutt, AKA The Speech Painter. It takes the work and world of Dr Seuss and re-imagines them for adults using the rhythms and tongue-twisting alliteration of Seuss’s classics to create a show of mind-altering poetry.
Along the way we meet a cast of original characters distorted and lost in a grown up world, where The Twat in the Flat can’t stop ingesting vast quantities of narcotics and the The Grinch has somehow transformed into David Lynch and an A-Z of Ted will tell of the often bizarre creations of Theodor Geisel AKA Dr Seuss.

Bloody Mary: In Service to the True God BCB Productions

2 stars As the audience file in for Bloody Mary, we are presented with a woman in 16th century regal finery, reading a modern newspaper and standing before a banner of recent headlines about Brexit. It’s an arresting and intriguing opening image, presenting the play’s central premise that little has changed in Britain over the intervening 500 years. Read the full review.

Rape, beheadings, burnings, and religious persecution run rife. Speeches made by the Conservative government weave through a text that explores damnation and salvation through the eyes of Mary Tudor. ‘Wolf Hall’ meets ‘Talking Heads’.

"Byrnes cleverly weaves into this character from long ago a thread of authoritarianism, received patriarchal certainty, and quasi-religious soundbiting, which has its analogue in much of contemporary politics" (The Scotsman)

"Bernie C. Byrnes’ clever script provided parallels with more recent characters in British history... right up-to-date" (Pauper’s Press)

5:00pm to 6:00pm

Adam Flood and Blake AJ: Joke Boys Joke Boys

Stand-up comics Blake AJ and Adam Flood unpack the funnies in an hour-long show split between them. One has an afro, the other is a cheeky Northerner, but they both have a zest for jest, a thirst for mirth, and a brand new subscription to a thesaurus app.

William Desmond has always considered himself 'The Golden Child'. If you tell yourself you can ride a horse, or down a pint while juggling 5 balls, or play the piano blindfolded then it must be true, right? Will can do all these things.

Will has always been the person that wanted to be the best at everything. Join the newest golden child of comedy cabaret, for an hour of musical theatre, original songs, and other mediocre performances.

As a jack of all trades, but master of none, Will explains why being good at everything often isn’t the answer.

As the night unfolds, Hannah and Glen’s relationship, honesty and openness is tested to its maximum as the recent events in the city they love fall on top of them.

5:30pm to 6:25pm
After Today Stage D’Or

4 stars (previous review) Reviewed in 2018 Bill Grundy sits swinging in a swivel chair, swigging from a hip flask and reflecting on the wreckage of his life. If you've heard of Grundy at all, it'll be because of the Sex Pistols: he's the hapless besuited interviewer who inexplicably goaded them into a flurry of obscenities, live on 1970's teatime TV. The episode cost him his job and his career, and we see him now – deliciously, hilariously – reduced to presenting a show called Close Up On Castles, a lunchtime filler which is clearly just as pointless as it sounds. Read the full review.

If the name "Bill Grundy" means anything to you, it'll be because of the Sex Pistols - whose expletive-laden live interview on Grundy's Today programme ended the TV host's career. This deliciously sardonic show, which earned 4* from us on its Edinburgh run, explores Grundy's wilful self-destruction and the ironic possibility that he helped promote the very group he so disdained. It's a sharply-written, witty performance - which does inspire a small amount of sympathy for a man whose own arrogance destroyed him.

Bill Grundy's fall from grace due to that interview with the Sex Pistols on Thames TV's 'Today' programme and what he did next.

We meet TV presenter Bill Grundy three years after his profanity-littered, car-crash interview with the Sex Pistols live on tea-time TV in 1976. An erudite, driven man, but with a huge self-destructive streak, Bill struggles to keep his career going. He reflects on how his career turned from being the era’s Paxman into a 70s Partridge, how he inadvertently kick-started a cultural movement he abhors and why that 'Today' interview continues to haunt him.

6:00pm to 7:00pm

Circus Abyssinia: Ethiopian Dreams Bibi and Bichu Ltd

Circus Abyssinia was a hot ticket at the Edinburgh Fringe a couple of years ago, and has a clutch of four- and five-star reviews to show off from its international tour since then. The show's narrative is built around two Ethiopian boys who dream of becoming jugglers - mirroring the inspiring real-life tale of the troupe's two founders. But it's the energy and physicality of the performance which reviews highlight most, with acrobatics, aerial work and clowning among the highlights.

Circus Abyssinia weaves the dreams of its cast through heart-stopping feats of acrobatic daring. Inspired by real-life jugglers Bibi and Bichu, the show tells the tale of two young Ethiopian brothers who dreamed of the circus in a country without one. When the boys make a wish upon the moon they are joined by a host of high-flying figures - some enchanting, others menacing, but all of them circus ‘dreamers’, who together awaken an incredible new Ethiopian tradition.

8:00pm to 9:00pm
Frankenstein the Pantomime Mangled Yarn

I admit, I'm going mainly by the title for this one, but Frankenstein The Pantomime could be an inspired creation. According to their witty Kickstarter video, we can expect a full-fledged family-friendly panto - complete with dame, clown, and dastardly villain - which still stays faithful to the original plot. It's a risky proposition of course, but they have the pedigree to pull it off, and one of the company's co-founders impressed me with a similarly offbeat War of the Worlds last year.

Watch in horror as Mangled Yarn splice Frankenstein with a pantomime!
Complete with the panto dame, original and live music, disco and dancing, glitz, glamour and the marvellously murderous monster to systematically destroy the lives of our heroes.

Mangled Yarn will lovingly 'unstitch' the story of Doctor Frankenstein, using a surgeon's kit of audience interaction, stand-up comedy, song, dance, a plethora of musical instruments, parody, pastiche and just plain silliness to put all the pieces back together and reanimate its mangled corpse . . . Sounds fun, huh?

8:00pm to 8:50pm

"Fatiha delivers cracking lines with a wicked glint in her eye, one of the funnest acts on the scene" (Funny Women)

8:00pm to 9:00pm
Borderline Millennial Kuan-wen

What if you were born on a cut-off point of two generations? What if no one really knows what that bloody cut-off point is? Kuan-wen finds himself jumping on the bandwagon of baby-boomer-bashing, but sides with management moaning about the "snowflake" generation at work. He doesn't fully trust Jeremy Corbyn but neither does he support the uncool Tory. He's just about managing new tech and social media.

This is a show by a neither-nor guy when it comes to generation generalisation, who isn't sure if he is unlucky, opportunistic or just indecisive. Oh, from a foreigner's perspective.

8:15pm to 9:15pm
Earnest & Wilde: Let's Face the Music (and Franz) Earnest & Wilde

The murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, widely seen as the trigger for the First World War, isn't the most obvious topic for a light-hearted cabaret musical. But Let's Face The Music (And Franz) gets away with that audacity, delivering sparkle and wit between the two performers on stage while telling an intriguing historical story at the same time. Our colleagues at Fringe Review awarded it a teapot in Edinburgh last year - a quirky trophy, to suit an unconventional but engaging show.

An irreverent musical retelling of the life and untimely demise of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. A peculiar, timeless duo invite you into their parlour to regale you with an eminently amusing evening of bombs, brotherhood and Beyoncé, punctuated by vintage jazz covers of contemporary popular music... and Rebecca Black.

Rebekka Turner: Like a Porcelain Doll with a Chainsaw Rebekka Turner

'Porcelain Doll with a Chainsaw' was an audience reaction to an early Rebekka performance and explains her rather well. A porcelain doll might be fragile but with added turbocharge she’ll cut you down with wit and chaotic energy.

Easily Amused? Louise Leigh is. Luckily, she’s adept at bringing you into her “witty, imaginative and ever-so-slightly risqué” (The Scotsman) world. Funny Women Regional Finalist and badly-behaved mother of two, Louise should probably be delousing her kids instead of gallivanting off to Brighton to appear in a festival. When she’s not removing parasites from her children, Louise somehow finds time to turn in “an impressive performance” (John Hegley) featuring the vagaries of parenting, navigating the choppy seas of middle age and how to shave your legs like you’re in an advert.

Imaginary Porno Charades Sweet Productions

It's obviously not for the easily offended, but there's no disputing the success of Imaginary Porno Charades – a cult hit at both the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringes, which does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. Two teams of comedians take turns to mime invented titles for dodgy blue movies, with kick-ass cabaret star Jo-Jo Bellini in the host's chair. I've heard enough praise from both men and women to know that it's an equal-equality night of irreverent ribald fun.

Ninety minutes of unstoppable panel show mayhem. You’ll be glad they can last that long! Featuring teams of performers from across Brighton Fringe, all of them ready to charade their audiences good and hard.

With porno puns, sexy signals, and outrageous observations to keep you up all night, this is a game show that’s strictly adult – and if we find any prizes, we’ll give you one...

In his debut solo stand-up performance, up-and-coming comedian Sam Went tries to figure out why his heart got broken and why it turned him into a Bicentennial Man super-fan.

Over the course of the show, Sam will use storytelling, multi-media elements and "dance" to tell the story of how the romantic odyssey of a creepy-yet-endearing robot butler healed his broken heart and convince you to love this movie just as much as he does.
